Quotation Marks

Typographic quotes come in pairs, and the opening mark is not the closing one. English prose uses curly double quotes (“ ”) with single quotes (‘ ’) nested inside. German and Russian open on the baseline instead: the „ “ pair, with ‚ ‘ for the single form. French, Russian and several other languages use guillemets (« ») as the primary pair. Straight quotes are a typewriter compromise that survived into code. Copy the pair you need here rather than letting an editor guess.
