The percent sign (%) means "per hundred": 25% is 25 out of every 100. It developed from the Italian abbreviation of "per cento", which scribes gradually reduced to a slash between two small circles. English writes it directly after the number (50%), while style guides in French and German put a space before it. Its relative ‰ (per mille) means per thousand, and a change between two percentages is measured in percentage points: from 10% to 12% is 2 points, not 2%.
On US and UK keyboards % is Shift+5. On iPhone it is on the #+= page, on Android on the =\< page.

In Programming
% is the modulo (remainder) operator in C, Java, JavaScript, Python and PHP: 7 % 3 is 1, and n % 2 == 0 tests for even numbers. In printf-style formatting it starts a placeholder (%d, %s, %.2f), so a literal percent is written %%. URLs use it for percent-encoding (%20 is a space), SQL LIKE uses it as a wildcard for any run of characters, Windows batch files wrap variables in it (%PATH%), and in LaTeX it starts a comment.
