The left curly bracket ({), also called a brace or curly brace, is the opening half of a pair that is rare in ordinary writing. In mathematics it encloses the elements of a set ({1, 2, 3}), and a tall brace groups the lines of a system of equations or a piecewise function. In print a large brace gathers several lines together, as in outlines and family trees. Most people meet it in code and in template placeholders such as {name}.

In Programming
In C, Java, JavaScript, PHP, Go and Rust { opens a block — a function body, a loop, a class — and whether it goes on the same line or the next is one of the oldest style debates. It starts objects in JSON and JavaScript and dicts and sets in Python. Templates print variables with {{ name }} (Jinja, Handlebars) or {{ $name }} (Blade), Python f-strings embed values as {x}, regex sets a repeat count with {2,4}, and CSS wraps each rule's declarations in braces.
