The exclamation mark (!) — exclamation point in American English — ends a sentence spoken with strong feeling, an order or a warning (Stop!). A popular but unproven theory traces it to the Latin io, "joy", written with the I above the o. In chess notation ! marks a good move and !! a brilliant one, and in mathematics n! is the factorial (5! = 120). Spanish also opens exclamations with the inverted ¡, and ‼ is a separate double-exclamation character.
On US and UK keyboards ! is Shift+1. On iPhone it is on the 123 page, on Android on the ?123 page; some Android keyboards also offer it on a long press of the full stop.

In Programming
! is logical NOT in C, Java, JavaScript, PHP and Rust (!done), and != means "not equal" (!== is strict inequality in JavaScript and PHP). In Rust a ! after a name marks a macro call (println!), and TypeScript uses a postfix ! as the non-null assertion (user!.name). In Bash ! negates a command's exit status and !! repeats the last command, and the #! shebang on a script's first line names its interpreter.
